Arranger — Project-Based (Freelance)

Rate: $30/hour Type: Project-based, freelance/contract Location: Remote, with in-person availability required for local Seattle clients

About the Work

Puget Sound Music (PSM) is an artist development company. Production services are available exclusively to our graduates — artists who have completed our development program. Each graduate receives two songs as part of the program, so you can expect a steady, predictable flow of single-song arrangement projects rather than one-off gigs. We're looking for a reliable, detail-oriented arranger to build out instrumental tracks and arrangements for these artists' releases — singer-songwriter and pop-adjacent material. Projects are typically single-song releases built from vocal reference and written direction. This role is arrangement/track-building only — mixing and mastering are handled separately.

What You'll Do

  • Build full instrumental tracks/arrangements from reference material and written direction (chords, instrumentation, structure, dynamics)

  • Program or record instrumental parts (whichever fits the song and your setup)

  • Work closely with the vocal melody to ensure the arrangement supports it naturally

  • Communicate clearly about creative decisions — especially anything left open to interpretation — rather than guessing and explaining after the fact

  • Deliver stems/session files in agreed formats and turnaround windows

  • Participate in a limited, defined number of revision rounds per project

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience arranging/building instrumental tracks for release (please share credits or a portfolio)

  • Strong arrangement instincts — can take a reference and written notes and translate them into a full track

  • High attention to detail — precision on structure, timing, and matching the brief matters more than speed

  • Strong communication skills — you flag ambiguity early rather than interpreting silently and revealing it later

  • Comfort taking detailed creative direction and asking clarifying questions upfront

  • Reliable turnaround on agreed timelines

  • Own DAW/instruments/setup; remote collaboration tools (Drive, Dropbox, etc.)

  • Available to meet in-person with local Seattle clients when requested, and over Zoom otherwise

How This Works

  • Clients will be triaged to you directly based on project fit — you'll work with the artist's reference material and direction for that specific song

  • You are paid hourly by PSM at $30/hour; you invoice PSM only, not the client directly

  • Clear reference materials and written notes provided at project start

  • Defined revision rounds and timeline set in advance, in writing, before any work starts
